During a learning expedition to Dublin, Lorenzo Ciampana, an MSc in Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence student at EDHEC, explored how leading companies like BNY Mellon, Salesforce, and Accenture apply AI. He shares how this immersive experience, led by Professor Peter Daly, aligned with his career goals—and helped reinforce his next steps in the fast-evolving world of technology, data and AI.

Why did you choose to join this learning expedition, and what attracted you to the destination?

I chose this learning expedition because, compared to the other options, it was the most aligned with my background and future career goals in technology, data, and AI. The destination made a lot of sense given Dublin's strong presence in the tech industry.

What were the highlights of the trip for you?

One major highlight was the visit to BNY Mellon. It was really interesting because I had the opportunity to explore a sector I had never been interested in before. It’s very different from big tech or consulting companies. Hearing from the experts opened my eyes to how much the financial sector needs to advance in Data Science and AI.

Another memorable moment was networking with former EDHEC Alumni. Even though I had already secured my internship, hearing their career experiences and tips about living in Dublin was incredibly valuable. Their advice gave me a clearer idea of how to start my professional journey on the right foot.

Which companies or institutions did you visit, and what were the key takeaways?

We visited BNY Mellon, Salesforce, and Accenture. Each visit offered unique insights:

  •

BNY Mellon showed how AI and machine learning are used internally in the financial sector. I also learned what backgrounds and skills are commonly sought for such roles.

  •

At Salesforce, I was impressed by the scale of their operations and how flexible internal career paths can be. Hearing from young employees showed me that it's entirely possible to transition between roles within the company.

  •

Accenture helped me realise that many of the projects I worked on at university closely resemble real-world consulting challenges. I had often doubted whether I was ready for the job market, but seeing Accenture’s recent Data Science projects and understanding their methods boosted my confidence.

How did the expedition help you better understand the topics you’ve studied during the year?

The company visits helped me understand how the topics we study are applied in real life. Also, during the CeADAR course, I had the chance to get hands-on experience by developing an actual AI product from scratch—as if we were working in a real consulting firm. It was a true test of applying classroom learning in a simulated professional environment.

What new perspectives or skills did you gain from this experience?

I improved my networking and teamwork skills. While working on the AI product, I was in a team with students from other Master's in Business Management programmes. Working with people who think differently than you is challenging—but it mirrors what happens in real-world projects.

How has the learning expedition influenced your career goals?

Absolutely. Speaking with professionals across various industries made me raise my ambitions. I was inspired by their career paths, and it motivated me to aim higher in my own career planning.

What advice would you give to a future student considering this learning expedition?

Take full advantage of the opportunity. It’s a great way to meet new people—both professionally and personally. You’ll make new friends and useful connections at the same time.
